Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Cameroon - Communication Executive Summary

Summary

As of November16, Cameroon has 2 confirmed cases of Polio for 2004 (WHO weekly Bulletin). Both of these cases are in northern border regions with either Nigeria or Chad. Overall OPV3 coverage to August 2004 was 70.3% with 36% of health districts reporting a coverage rate of less than 80%.

The communication consultant has sought to engage various civil society groups such as the Scouts/Guides, women’s groups and the Red Cross in the mobilisation campaign, and this has contributed to the available social capital. Communal and farming media, the national radio and the CRTV in every province has also been effectively engaged, though total overall coverage remains relatively weak. In addition there has been some limited use of traditional media such as griots, Tom-Toms, and storytellers.

Microplanning activities have been hampered by a failure of some districts to complete their maps and cartography activities, and the contributions and commitment of local partners has not always been effective. The consultants also note that social mobilisation remains one of the most underfunded components of the campaign.
