Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The 2022 International SBCC Summit, held December 5-9 2022 in Marrakech, Morocco, explored the role of social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) in addressing a variety of global development concerns, including polio eradication. The day before the official start of the Summit, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) held an interactive 6-hour side event, both in person (Morocco) and online, to focus on areas in which: there is substantial polio learning; key polio eradication complexities remain; and there is significant relevance to challenges faced across the full range of development issues, including the need to increase routine immunisation rates.

By examining recent work and thinking being done in the field through the lens of 3 key themes (see below), the purpose was to share and discuss learning from polio communication that can be helpful to both next steps for the polio programme and the work of people engaged on other development issues.

The event began with a welcome and introduction from UNICEF (SM Moazzem Hossain, Deputy Director, Polio Eradication, UNICEF New York headquarters (NYHQ).
