Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Polio Gallery

This video from Polio Free India is a slideshow depicting the opening of the "Drops of Dialogue" polio gallery at District Hospital, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh (UP), India created by CORE Group. As can be seen here, the event had the theme: for the children by the children: 1995 to 2014 (as symbolised by children taking part in the event). A welcome note from a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) representative was followed by speakers from various partners in India's polio eradication effort. CORE Group director Dr. Roma Solomon expressed gratitude for parents for their participation. A moment of joy for India's accomplishment in being declared polio-free in 2014 was represented by the release of colourful bunches of balloons. Then, participants in the event walked together to the gallery for the formal unveiling.

The video slideshow next takes the viewer through the journey of the polio eradication programme in India. The important milestones (e.g., 1999: stiff resistance to the oral polio vaccine (OPV) encountered due to false rumours) and communication strategies (e.g., 2004: religious leaders and institutions "lent their whole hearted support through meetings, appeals, mosque announcements, isthemas, etc.") are described in panels, alongside samples of handicrafts created by community members of various districts (e.g., a miniature of the "Polio Chowk", a statue unveiled in Moradabad in 2013 as a tribute to civil society's contribution toward polio eradication).
