Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Hi folks - UNICEF asked me to do a quick 2 page outline of the Global Alliance as an explanaton for senior managers, etc. I assume you also need somethimg for your orgs. Please see attached (when you click "Please click to review, comment, etc ... above. There is an early section called "UNICEF Imperatives". It has yellow shading. Shoud you use this document you wil of course need to replace with relevant text for your organisation. The remiander should be generic. Hope that this helps - most happy to receive any review comments. And if you do develop and share one for your organisation please do share! Thanks - Warren

Hi - I want to quickly update - and prompt! - on a few items:

1. Thanks to all for the individual responses confirming that you can access the Aliance coordination and communication platform logged in and can navigate the pages, etc.

2. If you have not yet done so please do complete the survey on Alliance meeting dates, signatory for the Agreement at this link asap - thanks. We really need that info.

3. We are still seeking to expand the Alliance organisations involved in the Policy Engagement and Alliance Infrastructure clusters. Please let me know by reply email if your org can join those clusters. Thanks.

4. On the home page of the communication platform for the Alliance at this link I have added the following:

a. A direct link to the present survey.

b. A link to a compilation of the tasks we have all agreed in order to provide you with a quick summary of tasks and responsibilities. Of course we will update these as we all move forward.

c. A link to the "2 pager document" just sent in a seprate note.

d. Of course you can still scroll down for the main threads in our work - for example the 3 Clusters and the Inisghts for Using the platform. Please note that these change order depending on what has been updated last.

All can now be accessed quickly from the coordination and communication platform at this link.

July 17, 2018 - Alliance sessions related to the HLPF - New York
July 18, 2018 - Full Alliance meeting - New York and virtual.

Best wishes. This is a quick update on some dates that will be officially confirmed over the next few days. As time is passing we wanted to give you a heads-up.

Tuesday July 17th, 2018 is almost definitely going to be the day of the Alliance session in the context of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York.

As one of the SDGs that is the focus of the 2018 HLPF is “Cities” there has been an invite from UNICEF to Anibal Gaviria (past Mayor of Medellin and Governor of Antioquia) to reprise his Nusa Dua presentation, with some suggested amendments related to a little more detail on the communication strategy he outlined and a higher emphasis on the media related themes and issues that have been so important in Medellin. We are awaiting Anibal’s final confirmation.

On the agenda for the Policy Engagement Cluster meeting next week will be the question of who else we may wish to speak. This will need to be a person or organisation with evidence and impact data knowledge and experience relative to the SDGs that are the focus for the HLPF: Goals 6 - Water and Sanitation; 7 - Energy; 11 - Cities; 12 - Consumption and Production patterns; and 15 - Ecosystems, forests, desertification, land degradation and biodiversity. We are hoping that the responses from the Alliance participating organisations to the Evidence and Impact survey - hint, prompt, please complete! - will provide lots of good, relevant evidence material that can be presented.

Work is commencing with both UNICEF and the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations to potentially co-host, support and promote the session that the policy engagement cluster will plan in detail. Obviously the Colombian Representative can communicate and promote with their peers in other UN country embassies and missions in New York. UNICEF can communicate with the UN system and related organizations. The Communication Initiative will back this up with relevant network notes. We will be providing text for all Alliance participants to share with their networks and encourage participation.

This is the broad outline of the plans to date. The Policy Engagement Cluster will continue to develop this event. We are very grateful to Adelaida for her continued point person role with Anibal and opening up connections and relationships with the Colombian Permanent Representative to the UN. More soon.

Wednesday July 18, 2018 is the day we are planning for the Alliance in-person meeting in New York. 63% of the Alliance participants who responded to the recent survey said they would possibly be in New York between the 9th and 18th of July. July 18th was one of the most popular and possible days identified by respondents in that survey. There will be further details soon but please do keep this date in your calendar. For those who can no make it to New York we will seek to provide a virtual connection perhaps through Skype for Business.

Thanks - we are of course most happy to answer any questions.

Warren (and on behalf of Rafael).

Hi folks and many thanks for engaging in the Global Alliance process. The Evidence and Impact Cluster met today. There are two matters on which they require your prompt input in order to advance the evidence and impact focused priority work. Many thanks for completing bye the deadline.

1. Global Alliance: Focus and paramaters for long term compelling evidence work

Could you please complete the quick survey at this link by July 5th, 2018.

2. Global Alliance: Compelling Evidence and Impact Data - What do you use or quote?

The deadline for this survey has been extended to June 30th, 2018. Please do complete as soon as possible as the data you identify is vitally important for the High Level Political Forum related policy engagement initiative in July, 2018.

There are further details in the introductions to these surveys at the links above.

Best wishes and thanks - Warren

Hi folks - a number of things to cover. Will try to do this in one communications rather than a number of messages. Please do REVIEW below and respond as appropriate. But, before that: Happy July 4th to our American friends.

1. HLPF related event: Following the guidance of the Policy Engagement Cluster, the High Level Political Forum event is confirmed for July 17th, 2018 in New York. The draft concept note and agenda will be shared with that Cluster soon for their review. We will be asking everyone to help “promote” this event. More soon.

2. GLOBAL ALLIANCE MEETING: Therefore there will be an in-person/virtual meeting of the Global Alliance on Wednesday 18th July in New York. Details also to follow. if you can get to New York please do! But in order to ensure broad participation there will also be a virtual connection.

3. EVIDENCE and IMPACT SURVEY: This is one last appeal to please (please!) complete this survey. Though a number of you have opened the Global Alliance: Compelling Evidence and Impact Data - What do you use or quote? survey only a very few have completed - namely Save the Children (5 provided); Soul City (1 provided); BBC Media Action (5 provided); ISMA (5 provided); and Breakthrough have asked me a Q to which I will respond now - they will complete the survey soon. If you have not yet completed please do in next two days. Otherwise it could look like we actually have very little evidence and impact data.

4. FOCUS and PARAMETERS for LONG TERM COMPELLING EVIDENCE WORK: There has also been a comparatively low response to this quick survey "Focus and paramaters for long term compelling evidence work" where the Evidence and Impact Cluster is facilitating your input into some key decisions that they need to take. Responses have been received from USAID, JHU CCP and ISMA. Others? Please. In the next two days.

5. RECURRING MEETINGS: At the most recent full Alliance meeting I was asked to provide the specific dates for the recurring cluster and full Alliance meetings. These follow. Please do enter into your schedules. UNICEF will be sending reminders with the Skype business connections and call-in numbers for each meeting.

FULL ALLIANCE MEETINGS: Wednesday July 18th (times to be confirmed) and then the final Thursday in each month at 10am New York time - for the reminder of 2018 these will be July 25th, August 30th, September 27th, October 25th, November 29th (will skip December!).

EVIDENCE and IMPACT CLUSTER meetings: the Tuesday in the 3rd full week of each month at 10am New York time. Due to the HLPF meetings there will be no meeting in July. The pattern for the remainder of 2018 will be: August 21st; September 18th; October 16th; November 20th; and,  December 18th.

POLICY ENGAGEMENT CLUSTER meetings: the Wednesday in the 3rd full week of each month at 10am New York time. Due to the HLPF meetings there will be no meeting in July. The pattern for the remainder of 2018 will be: August 22nd; September 19th; October 17th; November 21st; and,  December 19th.

INFRASTRUCTURE CLUSTER: the Thursday in the 3rd full week of each month at 10 am New York time. The pattern for the remainder of 2018 will be: July 19th; August 23rd; September 20th; October 18th; November 22nd; and, December 20th.

Of course each cluster may have sub-groups working and they may call additional meetings. The above are the core, scheduled, regular meetings. Please do put them in your calendars for the full meeting and the cluster(s) in which you are participating.

Thanks - really appreciated - Warren

REMINDERS:

Hi folks - I thought it was worth sending a note that consolidated four action requests and reminders that have been issued recently as we continue to collectively build this Alliance. Please let me know if there are any problems accessing the links below. Though the preference is for everyone to respond online using the comments facilities at each of the links below so we have threads in place for further review, if you wish to reply by email that is fine - we can then post:

1. PLAN - October 1 2018 to September 30, 2019

Please review the draft at the bottom of this link where it is included as an attachment  Alliance Work Plan and Budget (5) under the tab - Plan Oct 1 18 Sept 30 19  Though we discussed this in the most recent Alliance call, participants asked for further time to review and comment.

Deadline: Wednesday, October 17, 2018

2. BUDGET - October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019

The draft budget can also be accessed at the same link Alliance Work Plan and Budget (5) but please see the tab - Draft Budget 19  We did not have time to discuss this very draft expenditure budget in any detail in the most recent Alliance call. Substantive feedback is required.

Deadline: Wednesday, October 17, 2018

3. Policy Engagement Opportunities - survey

In order to guide and influence its work the Policy Engagement Cluster is asking you to identify the priority global and regional gatherings that you would recommend be a strong focus for this work. They have issued at this link a brief survey for response by all Alliance participants. Thanks to this who have completed - really appreciated. If you have not yet completed please do so at this link.

Deadline: Tuesday October 14, 2018

4. Evidence and Impact - Approaches search terms.

Please see this note from Doug Storey with the attachment “SBCC Approach - Search Terms 4 Oct 18 - Doug”  In his note Doug provides the background and purpose for this request. In summary, as requested in the Alliance meeting, you are being asked to identify any missing search terms that are required for a full and comprehensive list of the approaches/strategies in our common field of work - to make sure we do not miss anything. These terms will be combined with ones from the Sustainable Development Goals and Countries to produce the search booleans that will identify the evidence and impact studies.

Deadline: Friday October 19, 2018

Thanks. As above, the preference is for everyone to respond online using the comments facilities at each of the links below so we have threads in place for further review, if you wish to reply by email that is fine - we can then post.

Best wishes - Warren
