Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Health Belief Model

Theory Summary

"Two major factors influence the likelihood that a person will adopt a recommended preventive health action.

First they must feel personally threatened by the disease i.e. they must feel personally susceptible to a disease with serious or severe consequences .

Second they must believe that the benefits of taking the preventive action outweigh the perceived barriers to (and/or costs of) preventive action."

This way of looking at acceptability chances of communication is very useful to communication practictioner and planner. A little bit of elaboration is necessary to explain the concept further.

I do believe this theory, however, as I am a Registered Nurse, I often find patient perceptions short lived. The patient will feel a threat of disease and then it dissipates over time and that patient will slump back into bad habits. Somehow we really need to find a way for people to have longevity with committment.
