After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

BBC Media Action is pleased to invite you to watch Coming of Age: Communication’s Role in Powering Global Health - a discussion on the key issues related to communication and public health which will be will be streamed live from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s London office on Thursday 10th November between 9am – 10:30am.

The panel of experts discussing key themes from our new Policy Briefing Coming of Age: Communication’s Role in Powering Global Health has been confirmed as:

Professor Peter Piot, Director and Handa Professor of Global Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine;

Dr Elizabeth Fox, Deputy Coordinator, Child and Maternal Survival and Director, Office of Infectious Diseases at USAID;

Dr Gaya M. Gamhewage, Manager, Interventions and Guidance, Infectious Hazard Management, WHO Health Emergencies Programme

Dr Rafael Obregon, Chief, Communication for Development, UNICEF

Dan Metcalfe, Head of Brand and Campaigns, Wellcome Trust

Caroline Sugg, Head of Special Projects, BBC Media Action

 
Tulip Muzumdar, BBC News Global Health Correspondent, will lead the discussion covering:

  • How communication has shaped major public health developments over the last 50 years;
  • How seriously communication is considered in public health policy;
  • Why it remains weakly integrated into many public health programmes;
  • Suggestions for improving health communication practice around the world.

The event will be streamed live on YouTube, with live updates and images posted on BBC Media Action’s Facebook and Twitter pages under #discusshealth.
