Polio eradication action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Behavioural and cultural insights enable us to engage with communities and individuals rather than considering them solely as the recipients of health interventions."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), behavioural factors, including social and cultural aspects, account for 60% of the determinants of health, compared to medical care, which accounts for just 11%. The University of Exeter and the WHO Regional Office for Europe launched a web-based knowledge hub focusing on behavioural and cultural insights (BCI) in March 2022. The BCI-Hub provides a one-stop shop for those interested in the question of how our health is impacted by who we are, what we know, and what we do. It also provides background on the barriers to and drivers of healthy behaviours and practices.

The BCI-Hub provides an opportunity for users to explore how BCI can be used across a range of areas to improve health and well-being. Focus areas include antimicrobial consumption, arts and health, cancer, COVID-19, environment and health, health literacy, mental health, migration, and vaccines and immunisation.

The BCI-Hub is designed to share and showcase evidence and good practice. The site brings together content from past, present, and future projects related to BCI, created by both WHO and external partners. In addition to inspirational videos, podcasts, reports, toolkits, and other resources, users can search for specific products and case examples - from research to implementation.

The BCI-Hub was developed and is maintained by the University of Exeter's WHO Collaborating Centre for Culture and Health in partnership with the Behavioural and Cultural Insights Unit at WHO/Europe.
